A complimentary seven-day trip to Rome, Italy highlights another action-packed weekend of
activities at Fonner Park in Grand Island. The Tom Dinsdale Automotive Group will be on hand Saturday,
April 12th, with an exciting display of late model cars; featuring Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Hyundai.
By the end of the day, the Dinsdale boys will be giving away that exotic vacation to one lucky race fan
in attendance for live racing.
Only ten days remain on the local thoroughbred horse-racing scene. First race post-time is set for
3:00pm on Friday. Saturday and Sunday action goes at 1:30. Doors open every morning, seven days a
week, at 11:00am for nationwide simulcasting.
The best Nebraska-bred three-year-olds will be vying for $50,000 in purses as the Special Stakes
will be run in two divisions on Saturday.
Fourteen nominations were received in the colts and geldings class, including Jim Cranwell's Super
Charley. The son of Shadow Hawk, out of multiple-stakes-winning mare Burning Memories, has won
his only career start in an impressive debut-performance two weeks ago against maidens.
The filly-side of the ledger drew interest from seven nominees, led by Marvin Johnson's Princept. There
isn't a winner in the bunch. Princept was sent off as the 8-5 favorite on opening day back in February,
finishing fourth, beaten by less than four lengths- going a half mile. Four of the seven potential starters
have never raced before.
Incidently, Marv Johnson is still dominating the trainer standings with a nine win cushion over Joe
Hawley and Ron Westerman. 'Marvy' is sailing along at a 41% clip, winning 22 of 54 starts.
Jake Olesiak is Johnson's go-to rider. Olesiak has stretched his lead in the jockey standings to 28,
winning 56 of 171 mounts (33%). Veteran Mike Ziegler holds second place with 28 victories. Jordan
Olesiak is all alone in third with 22 wins.
The Heartland Events Center will be the site of another indoor-professional football game Saturday
evening as the Nebraska Danger host the Texas Revolution. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm.
