The theme for this weekend's abbreviated schedule for thoroughbred horse racing is "Family".
Fonner Park in Grand Island will be closed on Sunday, April 20th, in observance of Easter. Nine races
have been carded for Friday with a 3:00pm start.
Live action begins at 1:30pm on Saturday.
Saturday is Runza "Family Day" at the track, which has rapidly evolved into one of the most
popular promotions of the year. An afternoon of fun, games and entertaining attractions for the kids
makes for an exciting experience. Children will receive a free mini runza and pepsi upon entry,
and have an opportunity to participate in Fonner's annual Easter egg dash.
In addition, a complimentary color photo of Fonner's jockey colony will be available during a
special autograph session with the riders, set for 12:30 to 1:00pm.
As for the ponies, Racing Officials anticipate an eleven-race card Saturday afternoon, including the
24th running of the $15,000 Runza Stakes; a six-furlong dash for older fillies and mares. Among the 16
nominees is last year's Runza champion, Terice, who's owned and trained by Mike Kirby. Shady Bend
Farms and trainer Brian Roberts have their hopes set on a seven-year-old Nebraska-bred mare, Spice
Swirl, who comes off a strong winning performance in the Orphan Kist just a month ago.
For the fourth time this season, the U-Save Pharmacy Progressive Pick 5 Jackpot went out, paying
over $8200. This week's pot-of-gold resets at a guaranteed gross pool of $5000.
